Once you ask the plug-in to work for you, the process mimics YouSendIt’s online version:  input the e-mail address of the recipient, decided how long the document should be preserved for, and send it. A progress bar displays how much time is left before the document is sent. You will need to register with YouSendIt, and put your user name and password into the pop up, but once you’ve done that, you’re good to go.

The only thing I can see being a bit of an issue is the fact that the cap for a YouSendIt file through Office is 2GB. Big PowerPoint presentations are bigger than that, which can make the plug-in a bit redundant.

The plug-in might not be the perfect add-on that makes your Office suite hum, but it certainly makes sending the occasional big file easier. It’s a light weight plug-in too, so it’s worth the download.

Microsoft won’t say when the new version of Office, known as Office 14, will arrive, but Microsoft Business Division President Stephen Elop said that a technology preview of the browser-based products will come later this year and that a beta version will be released in 2009.

There’s a full Q&A with Microsoft Blogger, Sarah Perez here, including a discussion about whether the products will be free (unsure, but the indication is there will be an ad supported free version and a paid subscription version) and if a specific operating system will be required (not as long as you’re running a supported browser). Sarah answers all of the questions she came across most frequently misunderstood comments and questions here.

Edited to Add: The first release of the online versions of the products won’t have an offline option, so you’ll have to be connected to be able to use the online versions, for now at least.

Turn on the plug-in for Microsoft Office XP/2000

• Start Norton AntiVirus.
• If Norton AntiVirus is part of Norton Internet Security or Norton SystemWorks, then start that program.
• Click Options.
• In the left pane, click Miscellaneous.
• In the right pane, under “How to keep Microsoft Office documents protected,” check Enable Office plug-in.
• Click OK.

Turn off the plug-in for Microsoft Office XP/2000
