Google Sites now part of Google Apps
Google Sites which is now part of Google Apps, previously JotSpot which was acquired by Google last October 2006, is rumored to compete with Microsoft Sharepoint. Well, I do not know yet but please read this couple of articles from ZDNet:
- Google takes on Microsoft SharePoint with Google Sites by Mary Jo Foley
- Google Sites: A Sharepoint Killer? by David Greenfield
Both articles are very insightful about the current developments with both Sharepoint and Google Sites. Anyway, without much further ado, let me share you this video from the Youtube’s Official Google Channel, a video introducing Google Sites. The video is more than what I can write here, so please watch it to have a general overview of what this product can do.

Where did these authors get the idea that Google Sites is a competitor of Sharepoint? Have they actually used the two, or did they just re-write some Google PR materials?
Sharepoint and Google Sites are on two distant points on the features vs ease-of-use spectrum. Sharepoint has a pretty strong feature set but is too difficult to use for most users (Jane and Joe Average in the typical tech company) and costs too much to administer. However, Google went to the other extreme: Google Sites is very simple to use but has only the most basic wiki features.
The real competitors to Sharepoint are Socialtext, Confluence, Central Desktop etc. The competitors to Google Apps are Wetpaint and Stikipad, etc. Once people see the Google Sites feature set, I’m not sure who would use it other than only the newest newbies to wikis.
