iWork vs. Office?

by Jason on January 24th, 2006

That’s the argument in a recent post on CNET by Ina Fried. The discussion arises from the fact that Corel’s WordPerfect Suite lost the #2 spot behind Microsoft’s Office in 2005 to none other than Apple’s iWork application.

Looking at the Mac platform alone, iWork accounted for 17.4 percent, compared to about 82 percent for Microsoft. “Apple’s iWork didn’t overtake Microsoft Office, but I think taking almost a fifth of the Mac Office Suite market away from an entrenched competitor such as Microsoft is quite an accomplishment,” Swenson said.

Considering the fact that combined iWork and WordPerfect make up less than 5% of the total market (Microsoft has 95%), to me this is like talking about the horse than came in 2nd to last in the Kentucky Derby. Is this really news?

I’m all for competition, I think it’s better for everyone. We’ll see how the landscape changes, if any, once Office 12 is released later this year as well.

I like iWork over ms office on mac. Not sure why, but office just doesn’t seem very macish.

I asked scoble to interview the mac office team, but he hasn’t… yet. as far as I know the office windows and mac teams are totally seperate, so we might not see some of the ultra nifty stuff in office 12… (and we most defiantly won’t be see’n the ribbons…)
