Paul Thurrott’s Inside Office 12, Part 2

by Jason on January 27th, 2006

This is another great article from the guru Paul Thurrott. Part 2 goes into more depth about the features that will be available in Office 12, focusing on the user productivity. As always, Paul has available some great screen shots of the various applications with explanations of what we’re looking at as well. In this article some of the topics he discusses are:

  • Search
  • Word 12
  • Live Previews
  • The “Floaty”
  • Tables and contextual tabs
  • Super Tooltips
  • Document Inspector
  • Open XML Format
  • Access 12
  • Excel 12

One of the items that really stood out for me was in his discussion about Open XML formats with Jacob Jaffe and Jensen Harris.

Microsoft is using ZIP compression for a few reasons. First, ZIP is well understood, and there are plenty of ZIP applications and accessories out there. Second, with compression, Microsoft is seeing file size reductions of 50 to 70 percent, and almost without any loss of performance. “If you’ve got a Word document in the [old] binary file format, and you’ve got the same document in the Open XML file format, thanks to the ZIP compression, the new file is 50 to 70 percent smaller.”
